The following were all commended entries in the Laterlife Challenge 2006

Phillip from Bristol - College Lecturer prior to retirement

Its has been an ambition of mine for many many years to cycle up Mont Ventoux, which is in Provence. You see I am a cyclist, (many years ago I used to race, but now its more of a leisure activity, but can still be competetive) and Mont Ventoux and Alpe de Huez are two mountains that are used frequently in the Tour de France. So this year, in June, I achieved that ambition. the Ventoux, which is known as the Giant of Provence is 1912m high and the climb to the top is a 14 mile slog at an average gradient of 7.5%, which in some places is 12%. It took me almost 3 hours to reach the top, but what a thrill it was, the view was magnificent, but the achievement for me was far greater.

Stanley from Middlesex - Mortgage Broker prior to retirement

I started the Harrow Council Tax Campaign three years ago and obtained 25000 signatures which has now been recognized as the biggest Council Tax protest group in England appearing on various TV shows as well as speaking on radio. We were responsible for going to Council and Cabinet meetings in Harrow and forcing the Council to listen to us on behalf of the residents of Harrow and keeping Council Tax at the lowest rate possible . And in May I stood as Conservative Councillor and won the seat with over 2000 votes increasing the majority by 900. I have had two TIA and I am 69 years of age which proves you are never to old to enter politics.

David from Rutland - Foundry man prior to retirement

David who since he retired 4 years ago at the age of 65 has been travelling the world, mostly staying in hostels and also crewing and sailing on any boat that needs a crew member. He is quite able in the galley and on watch and never goes hungry! He is a very much liked where ever he goes and enjoys life, taking each day as it comes, one great adventure for him. He just lives off his pension and manages to make ends meet. He does spend a little time in the UK during the summer months to also see his family and then he is off again to warmer climates.
